Most of us are aware of the now fashion to visibly mend our garments, especially related to wool varieties, the knitted jumper we wore so well, which now has a threadbare vibe. But are you aware of what you are really doing? What you are really practicing? Actually you are a working model of seeking gold - imagine that! Well, it is true. All of this movement derives from the history surrounding Buddisim in the first place, yet it branches away from that now and centres around the traditional working methods of the Japanese people. The real people, those who could not afford to simply replace and rebuy.
What is all of this? Really, it is Kintsugi - the art of golden repair. This word means to mend the broken with the golden - healing and highlighting. Remembering a past, yet giving it a present too.
How does all of this relate to the book? This title shares how to create similar repairs for yourself, within the ceramics genre. So yes, we all have one, a chipped cup we love so much, it now sits and gets worshiped as it is no longer useable. Or the beloved childhood plate, smashed and about to end it in the bin…..now it doesn’t have to. It can continue!
With some clever tools, which you will have to pre-plan and purchase (Urushi lacquer and metallic powder) you will learn via this authors keen hand how to mend your own broken.
So get a coffee and an instagram worthy wooden table, along with your tools and use this title to get your gold on.
Oh and do not forget to read it beforehand so you understand the copious Japanese terms used throughout. I would give a special attention to Lesson 13 if I were you which explains then in detail a tad. (Page 28)
The author is a Japanese artist, so she knows her stuff. She also performs a repair service herself, so has constant hands on experiance.
