Mending with Boro
Japanese Running Stitch & Patching Techniques
Harumi Horiuchi
Tuttle Publishing
Boro has become a word known in our creative vocab. Why? More than just a passing phase, this method of repair is care, it is continuing, it is loving. The author hits on another element, that when we wear Boro, we are being different, we are making ourselves stand out from others. As Horiuchi says on page seven, this is ‘joyful mending’, it is not a chore.
Any highlights? For me, it is the part on mending shoes. Not something I expected to find (around page seventy seven.
The photography is sublime throughout. But so is the heartfelt comments via the author. On pages thirty and thirty one, she admits that sewing helps her to forget her worries - can this be the same for you?
