Abstract Embroidery
Slow Stitching With Texture, Colour and Creativity
Emily Botelho

Within this title, Botelho showcases twelve projects which focus on the zoomed in view. We are not looking at landscapes here, this book is all about the finer detail of many a natural environment which we often tread through and never really appreciate. Take for example the sand beneath our feet, the bark of a tree, the inner cavities of a shell. Next time you go for a walk, try to remain present, with a focused view - what could you photograph and depict within your own stitchery? What about fungi on that woodland walk, maybe a well worn path trod each and every day - can you visit with a fresh view, the excitement of the exploring child? It is possible - yes for you too.
This artist is just ordinary, one of us. Suffering from anxiety, she embarked on something hopeful - this very skill we see illustrated on every page (yet great images, the only downside being many are captured works within the frame of a hoop).
What is a key thought running throughout this title, is that the type of projects and ideas we can take on board, do not mean we have to travel far. We will all have a local location, be it our back gardens, or our local walking routes, even the sky above us.
Most of us worry about perfection, this book is not about that, it’s abstract, no one can quantify what our creative endeavours should look like.
So, where will you take your magnifying glass out to?
