Amazing Japanese Crochet Stitches

A Stitch Dictionary and Design Resource

Keiko Okamoto

Dare I admit it, I find the art of crochet currently beyond my stress ability. What do I mean by this? I come to my life as an artist, via fine art, the messy end of the tactile. No ruler in view, no pattern to behold. Yet this art form and yes it IS an art form in my eyes, is one I envy others and would secretly love to master. It is mathematical, methodical….almost otherworldly at times.

Lets be honest though. If I said crochet - what comes to mind? Is it something like the cover of this book? Or, more likely is it your granny square cushion, passed down from you know who? I know that embarrassingly that it is only in latter years did I begin to think around the concept of the crocket hook - what it could be, become, embroider.

This book is all about the instruction, the pattern, the how we will make what we see illustrated. There are 156 patterns - where to start?

Instead of looking through this title with fear at its complexity, why not see it as a challenge? For us, for our own personal education?
