Making and Drawing

Making and Drawing, authored by Kyra Cane and published by Herbert Press

Not a newbie shiny publication, its been around a few years….does this make it of less worth? I will tell you up front that this is no novelty throw away. Whenever you get your copy, it will stay with you, it is simply a matter of time.

Who is it for? I just love the mixed media multi faceted nature of this publication. As a mature student, I remember my old university lecturers bandying on about it. So yes, I went out and certainly purchased a copy. Time went on and amidst the flurry of exams, I never understood its worth at that time. Now, this is my take two as it were; I am coming at it with a further educated palette and yes, I now reccomend it to my own students. What makes it special?

So many of us are “good” at one area of the artistic process. Personally, as a curious person, I find sketchbook creating fascinating and pride myself on my development stages prior to the final piece action. Yet I have many companions and students who are just the opposite, great at the finesse of the final display of works, with no prior planning evidenced. Cane leads us through the who diary matter of why actually, the backstory, the sketches in rough, hold weight.

This book has been well placed, informed by many artists across genres, many showcasing their own take at the inside story…in other words their sketchbooks and back work.

The whole publication has been thoughtfully put together, isolating key areas without feeding us a ‘how-to’ at any stage. It is a read of worth, whether you are a mixed media, fine or textile based practitioner. Lets learn from artists and raw artistry, not a pigeon hole placement in sight. Discover your own potential, reflect on your worth….gather and grow and let your mind use this book to sow new concepts and connections into your very soul.
